Intercultural Communication

Hello everyone,

Take a moment to listen to this GCD post on Intercultural Communication by Yusei Y (Y12). In this interview, Yusei shares his experience of moving to a new school in Singapore, where he found himself in an English-speaking environment despite not knowing the language. He reflects on his efforts to make new friends without a common language. Yusei emphasizes that his experience demonstrates how connections with others can transcend language barriers; in his case, he used a shared interest in Pokémon cards to facilitate mutual understanding.

Yusei introduces metacognition as a means to develop awareness of other cultures. He also examines the consequences of failing to achieve this growth, reflecting on his own experiences of being excluded due to his inability to speak English. As a result, he strives to act with a better understanding of cultural nuances.

How did you overcome a language or cultural barrier with others? What strategies did you use?  For help writing your own post, reach out to Ms. Jess, or any member of the GCD SSC team, or visit NIST’s GCD website. To keep up with the latest NIST GCD news, follow us on Instagram!
